Some people are not sure if there will be "room" in the therapy conversation for their faith tradition. Others get frustrated with the process of continually explaining the basics of their faith to their therapist. My personal history and interests help me navigate conversations about religion and spirituality with compassion and curiosity.
In addition to my training as a therapist, I have obtained a graduate degree in Christian theology, served in ministry contexts, and worked as a multi-faith ministry coordinator at Boston College. In these roles, I have been privileged to witness prayers and spiritual practices of my Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist peers. These experiences have prepared me to have meaningful conversations about your faith (or lack thereof) and its interplay with your mental and emotional health. During my career as a therapist, I have worked well with clients all across the spiritual landscape, from Wiccan, to evangelical Christian, Buddhist, Pagan, Atheist, "seeking," and beyond. In short, I approach all spiritual practices and religious journeys with the respectful curiosity and reverence that they deserve. When relevant, I help you explore the ways that your values, beliefs, and rituals can provide a foundation to counter the problems affecting you or your family.
While acknowledging the importance and centrality of spirituality for many people across the world, I also understand the great harm that religious institutions, ideologies, and leaders have inflicted throughout history. Religion and spirituality are often fraught topics, filled with both promise and pain. If you are looking to renegotiate your relationship with religion, or to heal from religious trauma, I would be privileged to support you in these initiatives.
If you have been looking for a therapist who is open to these conversations, contact me here.
